Abstract
This is the story of a 5-year-old little girl diagnosed with a medulloblastoma and fighting for her life. For decades, I have been deeply involved with cancer patients and successfully treated similar cases and other types of pediatric cancer beyond classical oncology. With this particular case, we have again demonstrated that the intake of some selected natural compounds with anticancer properties can be safely used as a complementary treatment to benefit cancer patients.
Many dietary supplements have been integrated into cancer prevention and cancer therapy. They are largely documented for their capacities to target apoptosis, angiogenesis and immune cell activity, alongside chemotherapy to improve the effectiveness of the treatment and decrease or eliminate side effects. (1-2)
Medulloblastoma, like any other cancer, is treated with classical oncology, including surgery, radiotherapy, and chemotherapy. However it is often too toxic for children and according to data, experiences long-term side effects from treatment. (3)
Introduction
Medulloblastoma is the second most common brain tumor in children. It’s the most common malignant (high-grade) children brain cancer. So much so that the St-Jude Children’s Research Hospital in the U.S., functions only for children with medulloblastoma.
However, the basis of treatment remains about the same as any other brain cancer, which includes surgery, chemotherapy, radiation, and proton therapy. Although they may use lower doses of chemotherapy compared with other centers, this treatment still triggers toxic effects and may only increase the lifespan of patients with poor quality of life.
Today, boosting the immune system is considered an important strategy in Oncology. Evidence shows that NK cells of pediatric cancer are less frequent, less mature and less cytotoxic and express low levels of activating receptor NKG2D. (4)
Immune responses are essential for effective treatment. Chemotherapy, radiation, and surgery suppress the NK cells’ activity (5-6) depresses immune cells’ activity. Therefore, supporting NK cell activity remains a main goal in any cancer treatment, and one important move in immuno-oncology is to increase the activity of NK cells, which is associated with cancer risk, cancer growth, and metastasis. (7)
Toxic side effects are frequent problems after medulloblastoma treatment, including long-term medical complications such as neuro-cognitive dysfunction, (neuro-psychological) endocrine dysfunction, growth problems, musculoskeletal secondary malignancies, and metastasis. (8)
For instance, endocrine deficit occurred in 52% of cases, neurological complications in 72% of cases, and significant school problems in 72% of cases. However, all patients have significant deficits in neurocognitive function. The main complications affecting prognosis have been presented by tumor recurrence and metastasis.
Three years after surgery, survival has been 52% in cases with total resection against 34% in cases with partial resection. In some studies with 47 children who were surgically treated by direct approach for the tumor, 30 died within 30 days after surgery, and 22 patients died months after treatment, mainly from tumor recurrence. (9)
NK cells have been involved in cancer surveillance. Major surgery induces significant immunosuppression, mainly associated with the profound suppression of NK cells affecting both cytotoxic activity and cytokine production and disseminated cancer cells. (10)
This shows the importance of improving the NK cell activity of patients before and after surgery, especially with partial extraction of the tumor that alters biological properties of neoplastic cells, which in turn lead to dysfunction of the P53 tumor suppressor gene and reduced apoptosis, increasing cellular proliferation. Today we know that surgery depressed NK cells, and T-cell activity, stimulated pro-inflammatory cytokines, prostaglandins, and catecholamines. This with with other surgery procedures, increased tumor cell dissemination, increased circulating tumor cells survival and invasion, and migration capabilities to establish metastatic foci or cancer recurrence, or new cancer. (11)
Tumor removal may facilitate tumor growth by reducing the concentration of anti-angiogenic agents such as angiostatin, causing an angiogenic switch and promoting the formation of new blood vessels to promote tumor growth. (12)
Angiogenesis is required for a tumor to grow beyond the size of a pea and to expand. During surgery (and chemotherapy), dormant cancer cells escape or form micro metastases, and reactivate and form a new tumors, depending on the angiogenic or anti-angiogenic factors, which can may take 6 months or 2 years, depending on the angiogenic factors. (13)
No wonder recurrence is higher with partial resection of medulloblastoma, which requires an immunomodulatory approach to reactivate the NK cells and T-cell activity. In adult cancer, NK cells can increase to normal levels after two weeks or more, but in cancer stages 3 or 4, NK cells may not recover. In pediatric cancer, NK cells are not fully mature, not frequent, and not cytotoxic because of low levels of perforin and granzymes. So it is not surprising that pediatric cancer and medulloblastoma, with partial resection, have a higher risk of recurrence and mortality.
Today, the situation is alarming with the rise of cancer in adults. According to Cancer Research UK, 1 in 2 people will experience cancer in their lifetime (or 2 out of 3 people), such as colon cancer, breast cancer, or pancreatic cancer. Recently, cancer risk in children has been rising very quickly, the numbers are alarming.
Portugal holds the sad first place in Europe for juvenile cancer. Medicine is still concentrated on spending billions of dollars on developing more toxic therapies with side effects, while research and clinical application of natural compounds are still neglected. Indeed, today professionals are no longer speaking about curing cancer, just about stopping disease progression, or reducing the tumor by 1cm or 2cm is considered a success. Prolonging survival, for many types of cancer, is expressed in only a few weeks or months (or years) and is also considered a success. (14)
The Story of the Patient
The patient is diagnosed with a large 6cm tumor located in the posterior fossa and immediately subject to a first surgery, but not much of the large tumor could be removed. Two months later, in September 2023, a second resection surgery removed 90% of the tumor and left a mass of 1.6cm x 1.2cm attached to the brain stem with a high risk of spreading to other parts of the central nervous system ( brain and spinal cord).
October 13th: The parents flew to Spain to have their daughter treated at the Navarra Oncology Clinic with classical Proton therapy and aggressive chemotherapy, vincristine, and carboplatin with many side effects (15), until November 27. The little girl returned home in December, in a very weak physical and mental condition and started a new chemotherapy regimen based on FDA protocol.
First contact with the family
After returning home in December 2023, the father directly contacted me. We have managed a first Zoom meeting so I could explain to him and his wife what they can expect from classical oncology, the high risk of metastasis and disease recurrence, and how we can support their daughter to obtain better results with a complementary treatment. This is a young couple with two children, one younger son and the oldest daughter, apparently both healthy.
The father is a very open-minded person and knows that conventional medicine is limited for this type of cancer. However, as a father, he is willing to try anything that can help his daughter. The little girl is not feeling well at all. Her physical condition has deteriorated. She can hardly walk, is not sleeping well, has no appetite, and is losing weight. Her mobility is limited. She has poor balance and coordination, and in a lot of pain because of several surgeries and the intake of drugs.
In the first photo (December 2023), we can see how the little girl is suffering from so many side effects, not to mention her poor psychological condition.
In the second photo (December 2024), after one year, her great improvement is visible after taking selected natural compounds complementary to chemotherapy. Those compounds have greatly contributed to improving her condition by eliminating the toxic effects of chemotherapy and also enhancing her physical and psychological condition.

The complementary treatment
Asaigermanium
The patient started the complementary treatment as soon as it was possible to have the different natural compounds available, alongside chemotherapy. This suggested treatment is based on my clinical work and experience of several decades treating in my clinic hundreds of cases of adults and children.
It includes the intake of a very special substance named organic germanium known as Asaigermanium water-soluble organogermanium compound synthesized in 1967, by the late K Asai at the Asaigermanium Research Institute (Japan). It is a very powerful natural compound and confirmed to be extremely safe, with no toxicity and a wide range of applications in oncology. (16-17)
Asaigermanium plays a pivotal role in normalizing the immune system by an increase of NK cell cytotoxicity and the production of IFN-γ, which in turn increases the activity of dendritic cells, T-cells, and macrophages. (18-19)
Asaigermanium increases the amount of oxygen transported by hemoglobin, facilitates the restoration of oxygen respiration (oxidative phosphorylation) in the mitochondria, and inhibits abnormal glycolysis in cancer cells. (20)
Improving cellular respiration means increased production of ATP energy molecules by the mitochondria, thus increasing the patient’s energy levels. We have seen cases of patients with lung cancer and severe difficulty to breath requiring the daily intake of oxygen even during the night, completely restored after intake of daily high doses of Asaigermanium. The Asaigermanium also works as a strong antioxidant decreasing oxidative stress and free radicals activity by increasing the endogenous production of SOD, catalase, and glutathione. (21).
Oxidative stress is often strongly activated in many types of cancer, especially in stages III and IV of cancer. Chemotherapy and the cancer itself can increase oxidative stress levels that activate NF-KB, which in turn inhibits NK cells’ activity, active angiogenesis, and suppresses the P53 gene and apoptosis. Permanent oxidative stress in cancer patients is associated with a poor prognosis. According to Prof. Tsunco Kada of the National Institute of Genetics, Asaigermanim works as a potent antimutagenic in gamma rays and to repair genetic damage, thus delaying the development of secondary cancer. (22)
Asaigermanium may have many other properties, but the subject is too long to detail in this article. For instance, Asaigermanium possesses electromagnetic properties that may decrease the electric potential of cancer cells, resulting in decreased activity with less resistance and more ease to be destroyed through the immune defense. K Asai explains in his book Miracle Cure-Organic Germanium that Asaigermanium increases the production of endorphins and, as a result, decreases pain, which is important in the case of cancer patients.
In this particular case, after returning from Spain, the young patient had a significant pain reduction, when she started taking Asaigermanium. In time, the pain was totally eliminated.
The Biobran \ Rice Bran Arabinoxylan (RBAC) is another interesting natural compound, a functional food with no toxicity that possesses strong immunomodulating effects and anticancer properties. Biobran is a modified arabinoxylan complex produced via hydrolysis of rice bran hemicellulose B using mycelia shitake mushroom.
Since 1990, Biobran/RBAC has been patented and manufactured exclusively by Daiwa Pharmaceutical Inc., Tokyo, Japan, as a strong immunomodulator and sold as a functional food in about 52 countries. Biobran is very efficient in activating the production of cytokines and, in return, stimulates the NK cells to promote the maturation of dendritic cells that, in turn, activate T-cells and macrophage activity. (23).
Biobran, throughout the production of cytokines, stimulate NK cells that secrete IFN-y, and TNF-a to increase the cytotoxicity of NK cells. Biobran arrests the cell cycle at Sub G1, which in turn, activates the P53 gene, increases the expression of Bax activity, decreases Bcl2 to trigger apoptosis, and kills cancer cells. As an alternative, Biobran can stimulate the death of cancer cells via the non-P53 apoptotic pathways, but dead receptors CD95. (24)
Biobran stimulates the production of IL-2, IL-12, and IL-15 with direct antitumor activity. For instance, IL-12 can suppress angiogenesis, stimulate the Trail/Fas ligand death receptor, and induce apoptosis in various cancers. Studies have shown that Biobran exhibits a synergistic effect when combined with anticancer drugs such as daunorubicin and adriamycin, increasing effectiveness by increasing the activity of NK cells and apoptosis while reducing or eliminating side effects with better QOL. (25)
Both Asaigermanium and Biobran have been for many years an integral part of most of my anticancer treatment. I have published a large article in the Japanese Journal of Medicine about my wide experience with Asaigermanium, using it with different types of chronic and degenerative disease, but also many cases of cancer since 1975. (26)
Over the past two decades, I have also published in various International magazines about organic germanium, cancer theories and cancer clinical cases. (27)
Tegaran formula Zhen Huha is a special patented formula made from fermented soy with no toxicity that contains phytic acid, saponins, protease inhibitors, and phytosterols, and is richer in Genistein.
Tegaran is one of the most effective anticancer agents adopted in various types of cancers. (28)
Tegaran targets most of the molecular aspects of cancer, including pro-apoptotic genes, inhibitors of apoptosis, inhibition of angiogenesis, and MDR1 expression. Genistein itself emerged as an important anticancer agent and inhibitor of metastasis. (29)
Genistein downregulates TGF-B and inhibits NF-KB, which suppresses immune cells and activates angiogenesis. (30)
Tegaran fermented soy extract increases the efficacy of chemotherapy and, combined with a low dose of doxorubicin and results in a significant decrease of Bcl2, survivin expression and boosts Bax gene expression, while it also increases the activity of the NK cells in just a few hours and raises the leucocytes count (WBCs). (31). Tegaran is developed by System-Biologie AG. Switzerland.
Together, these 3 compounds have been shown to work synergistically at different levels, such as increasing NK cell activity, increasing apoptosis, inhibiting angiogenesis, increasing chemotherapy effectiveness, increasing QOL and energy levels of patients, and building a barrier against any risk of new metastasis. NK cells in children are less mature, less cytotoxic (perforin and granzymes), and have less capacity to penetrate solid tumors. So it may explain why cancer patients, including pediatric cancer are subject to disease recurrence. Major surgery, chemotherapy, and radiation suppress NK cells and T-cell activity, so support to restore NK cell activity is needed.
After a couple of months, the patient started to improve and felt much better with more strength each day, gaining more weight, even when doing chemotherapy. She eats and sleeps better and has no more pain. Her hair has growing back more and more. She recovered from a lower white blood cell count, even when doing more chemotherapy in Argentina. After one year, we observe a major physical improvement and a better psychological condition, looking happy and playing like other children.

A new scan done in March 2024 showed no trace of a tumor; however, according to the oncologist, she has to keep doing chemotherapy, as what he says is part of the FDA protocol. Thank God she was taking my treatment at the same time for protection, and to increase the effectiveness of chemotherapy. She stopped chemotherapy in June 2024. She started to ride a bike and play golf. The little girl started to live and enjoy her life!
Today, February 2025, a CAT Scan shows no trace of a tumor. Electroencephalogram and blood analysis returned to normal range. This is one good example that shows how we could treat juvenile cancer with more dedication using some selected bioactive agents, and not be limited to conventional treatment, often with high toxicity. After nearly 2 years, Merlina is still taking Biobran, Asaigermanium, and Tegaran and follows a special anti-cancer food diet known as the ketogenic diet with no difficulty. (32).
In the last photo taken in February 2025, we can observe how the little girl from Argentina is getting better and better, her hair continues to grow, and joy is now implanted in their home.

Discussion
The article shows that the use of natural anticancer agents to target cancer pathways, especially activated NK cells could open the door to a new paradigm in oncology. Accumulated evidence and pre-clinical studies show the importance of NK cells in controlling tumor development from the initiation, promotion, progression and development of metastases. (33)
Chemotherapy and radiation not only trigger side effects but often render cancer cells resistant to toxic agents, while the use of additional natural compounds such as RBAC can sensitize cancer cells to chemotherapeutic agents, increasing their destruction. Activated NK cells enhance the response to chemotherapy and radiation, which is probably the case with this patient since two scans were taken during the protocol and haven’t found any more traces of tumor cells.
Angiogenesis is another important mechanism used to target cancer, since tumors cannot develop, grow, or reactivate without the need of a new blood supply to get food, growth factors, and oxygen. Dormant cancer cells and micro-metastases can reactivate only if pro-angiogenic factors are activated. This explains dormant tumors that reactivate after three to ten more years. Depending on the angiogeneic switch. Surgery is also responsible for the angiogenic switch, promoting the formation of new blood vessels to promote tumor growth. Tumor removal may facilitate tumor growth by reducing the concentration of anti-angiogenic agents, such as angiostatin. (34)
This is the role played by a number of natural compounds, largely documented like genistein or Rice Bran Arabinoxylan, Biobran, and Asaigermanium and the basis for any anticancer treatment. By treating cancer patients, we cannot rely only on the FDA protocol and just wait for the result, positive or negative, or be satisfied if the patient dies. Oncology has an urgent need to use non-toxic treatments and open a new paradigm. Accumulated evidence shows that we can obtain better results if we use well-documented natural natural compounds, which for decades have demonstrated efficacy (35) in conjunction with chemotherapy or radiotherapy.
At this time, we cannot say that the little girl is definitely cured since more time is necessary and recurrence is always possible, but by continuing to take the natural compounds, we have a chance to keep any remaining micro metastases under control. It has been proven that cancer recurrence is mainly associated with depressed NK cells, and now we know that surgery has a double sword and may be responsible for cancer recurrence. According to Ben Pfeifer, MD PhD professor of oncology (USA), surgery is responsible for 30%-40% of cancer recurrence or even more. For a number of years, Ben Pfeiffer, director of research at the Esculape Clinic in Switzerland, uses the Pfeifer Protocol for cancer that includes Biobran. (36)
I remember in 2015, during my years of practice, a case of a 9 year old boy with a bad Ewing sarcoma when his parents brought him to my clinic. In his case, the whole tumor, located near the spine, could not be removed. The patient was undergoing chemotherapy and radiation with severe side effects and anemia, and a blood transfusion. We followed up on the result of the treatment by doing molecular marker testing, as I usually do with other cancer patients. This is a way to predict any new cancer development. I treated this boy for several years, and today, after 10 years, the boy, at 19 years, is still cancer-free and looks very healthy.
He eventually had a portion of the tumor could be removed, and after 10 years, the boy remains cancer-free. As far as I recall, he took Biobran for seven years, and Asaigermaium to combat the anemia and blood transfusion for at least one year… So far, the treatment has been very efficient against metastasis recurrence, not only by the activation of NK cells but also against angiogenesis that tumor cells use to grow and expand, even after we increased the sensitivity of cancer cells in the last chemotherapy protocol. The energy level of the boy increased from taking Asaigermanium, which activated mitochondrial function, producing the vital energy molecules known as ATP, the basis of living aerobic life on this planet. Reactivating the cellular respiration of mitochondria is now recognized as an important step in the treatment of cancer. (37)
